Meditation- it's no longer a secretive practice carried on by Tibetan monks or Eastern Yogis. There's been a lot of hype around meditation, especially within the last decade. Today, meditation isn't some voodoo, ritualistic custom anymore, but a scientifically backed exercise used for multiple reasons. Calming the mind and thus stilling thought, is important in many ways. The dedicated Yogi sees meditation as one of the vital "Eight-limbs" of Yoga, aimed at achieving bliss and enlightenment. The modern-day businessman/woman may view meditation as a useful tool for overcoming daily stress, focusing erratic thoughts or preparing for a significant board meeting. Meditation is even showing up in schools as a way to calm and center children before starting the day, or taking an exam. Whatever the reason may be, meditation is undoubtedly beneficial for everyone. There are many techniques available for practicing meditation, but the bottom line is really to still all thought. That may sound simple enough, but for most people it can be an arduous task. This is actually why Yoga Asanas (physical postures) were created. The postures were designed so that the physical body would be totally focused on doing the pose, giving the mind no other choice but to quiet down and concentrate on the present moment. In fact, Yoga Asanas were created almost purely for preparing the mind for long periods of meditation, which enabled Yogis to connect with their "true" selves, or The Divine. Whatever your reason may be for practicing meditation, allow yourself to find what works best for you and remember not to be impatient with yourself. Chances are, your first rounds of meditation will be interrupted by a thought at some point. Don't be discouraged! Have patience, have faith, and results will present themselves at the right time. Below you'll find a video for a beginner meditation. Don't limit yourself to just one source though; feel free to explore multiple options and find what resonates with you!
