90% of excuses for avoiding Yoga classes revolve around "I'm just not flexible enough," or "I won't be able to keep up with everyone else in the class." It's understandable that unknown territories can invoke fear and strike a nerve within us, especially if we've been conditioned to believe Yoga is purely about touching one's toes. The truth is Asanas - the physical postures of Yoga - only comprise one eighth of the holistic practice.
The unity of these aspects strives for the idea of enlightenment - a state of absolute bliss. Yoga is NOT about body contortion or being more flexible than the person next to you. It is, after all, an internal and individual process. It's important to remember that the "journey" truly is the "destination" - for there's no end to it all. Each and every Yogi is on their own journey- one unique to the trials and tribulations of their life. Skeletal systems, muscular configurations and personal belief systems vary person-to-person, so it's obscene to compare yourself with another student of Yoga. When you're able to accept where you are right now, you'll actually get where you want to be much faster.
If you've ever considered trying a Yoga class, but feel insecure or unprepared, know that we are all students in the practice of Yoga- even the greatest masters. Do you think you're not bendy enough to do Yoga? Not strong enough for some of the poses? Great. Come to a Yoga class.
